Minions is getting a sequel because one movie wasn’t enough

What was meant to be a cheap gag in Despicable Me is becoming a full blown pop culture phenomenon. Universal and Illumination this week revealed Minions, those little yellow memory foam creatures who speak gibberish, are getting yet another feature length film—the first came out in 2015 and received mostly mixed reviews.

Although their charm is best consumed in small doses, Illumination apparently feels another story needs to be told, because why not? In the first movie, Kevin, Stuart, and Bob went out in search of an evil master to serve, finally settling upon Gru, who is the star of Despicable Me. Now that we know the origin of the Minions, what else is there to say?

Minions became the breakout star of Despicable Me, which was released all the way back in 2010. Since then, they’ve become a phenomenon unto themselves. They’re harmless fun, achieving success by catering to our most basic standards of humor and entertainment. When you watch them, it’s hard not to delight at their absurdity.
