Nike’s efforts to sell its own smartwatch may have fallen flat, but New Balance is ready to give the market a shot. The company announced plans for a new Android Wear device this month, along with an entire lineup of connected wearables and software.
“Digital technology has truly revolutionized, very quickly, this industry and New Balance wants to continue to be a brand on the forefront, arming our athletes with the cutting-edge products that will help them reach peak performance,” said President and CEO Rob DeMartini.
New Balance says the new smartwatch will be the first product to launch out of its new Digital Sport division, though it won’t actually arrive until the 2016 holiday season. The device will offer built-in GPS and enough storage to hold your music. It’s being designed with help from Google and Intel.
The company also plans to launch a connected sneaker, clothing and other sports equipment with built-in sensors for tracking your activity. On the software side the shoemaker teased New Balance Run Club, a sort of social network for runners that lets you connect to other people, track your performance and share your favorite routes.
