New details emerge about Guillermo del Toro’s next film The Shape of Water

Guillermo del Toro’s next project, The Shape of Water, was announced last year, but few details were known about the movie. That was until one of his frequent collaborators just revealed what exactly the film will be about.

Actor Doug Jones, who has worked with del Toro in four films, including Hellboy 1 and 2, Pan’s Labyrinth and Crimson Peak, will join him for The Shape of the Water, and he’ll portray a fish-like creature. Not only that, but he also provided a sneak peak as to what the film will be about.

“It’s a 1963 drama—it’s not a sci-fi [film], it’s not a genre film, but I am a creature in it. I’m a fish man that’s kind of a one-off,” Jones revealed in an interview with Collider. “I’m an enigma, nobody knows where I came from; I’m the last of my species so I’m like a natural anomaly. And I’m being studied and tested in a U.S. government facility in 1963, so the Russian Cold War is on, the race for space is on, so there’s all that backdrop and that undercurrent. I’m being tested for how can they use me for advantages in military or space travel, or my technology—can we make this usable for humans? So they’re trying to keep me a secret from the Russians.”

The new project sounds really interesting and will give Del Toro an opportunity to return to the types of movies that initially put him on the map. Joining Doug Jones, Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Perkins, Michael Stulbarg and Octavia Spencer will also spearhead the impressive cast.

Guillermo del Toro is back with a period movie

Guillermo del Toro doesn’t focus on period movies, but he masterfully sets certain films or segments of films in certain periods that add to the eeriness and mythology of his movies. Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy both use this technique and succeed in setting up the story that stands in front of the masterful backdrop Del Toro creates. From the looks of it, The Shape of Water will follow in the same footsteps.
