New Mutants movie script being written, familiar faces to return

With Bryan Singer’s X-Men trilogy coming to a close, and Wolverine 3 being the last movie Hugh Jackman will ever participate in, Fox will need to find ways to expand the X-verse. As it turns out, Deadpool was just the beginning of a larger expansion.

Speaking to Simon Kinberg, who has been a longtime producer of the X-Men films, IGN discovered that Fox still has plans to move forward with the New Mutants. We began hearing about this project as far back as last year, but Fox has remained relatively quiet about what it has planned. According to Kinberg, however, a “really cool” script is currently in the works.

“Josh Boone and his writing partner are working on the script,” Kinberg revealed. “They’re doing a really nice job of it, and it’s a really cool one, because in many ways, like Deadpool was so different from the mainline X-Men movies, New Mutants… it’s maybe not as different as Deadpool, but it has its own unique, original voice to it.”

Kinberg added that New Mutants will have a different vibe that will appeal to young adults. As for which characters might appear in the film, Kinberg didn’t give an exact roster but teased there’s a long list of names to choose from.

“Traditionally, the New Mutants have some characters that cross over from the mainline X-Men movies,” Kinberg said. “As we are going, I would say it’s likely that you will see some familiar faces.”

According to HitFix, we might already know the first three mutants cast in the film. The report claims we’ll see Wolfsbane, Magik, and Storm to feature prominently; these roles will be played by Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Alexandra Shipp, respectively. In addition, James McAvoy’s Professor X is also expected to take part, along with Cannonball, Sunspot, and Mirage, possibly setting up a handful of new X-Men movies to come.

With a script still being worked on, New Mutants probably won’t go into production for at least six more months, maybe more. For now, X-Men fans have X-Men: Apocalypse to look forward to at the end of May, along with a Deadpool sequel at some point in the future.
