Ooh-aah, the 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS. The big, scary fast 911 to end all 911s. Just unofficially, for now.
Following the car’s bizarre unveiling at E3, of all places, we had no specs to recite in order to impress our friends. The figure “640 horsepower” was thrown around. Our pals at Road & Tracksaid that save for a few journalists that were invited to a first ride, nobody knew much more than that.
It appears that Automobile Magazine’s Georg Kacher was one of the journalists who got to ride along in one of Porsche’s eighteen newest Super Ultimate RS 911 prototypes. He wrote:
If you think the new 500 hp/339 lb-ft 911 GT3 peels tarmac like nothing else, you’re in for the shock of your life as soon as the GT2 RS’s 700 hp of power and 553 lb-ft of torque grab you by the bowels. Despite the related nomenclature, the GT3 and the GT2 RS are worlds apart thanks to the power and torque differences. Just consider: the GT2 RS, Porsche says, can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 2.9 seconds and reach 212 mph.
Zero to 60 in 2.9 seconds? 700 horsepower? A top speed of 212 miles per hour? These are insane numbers! I reached out to Porsche to verify the figures, thinking this would not be an issue, as Kacher said that Porsche supplied some of these numbers itself.

A Porsche spokesperson wrote back, “Such a model has not been officially announced, and no specs have been confirmed or released. Thus, we can’t comment or participate in speculation about potential future product.”
This is a very strange response!
This, in essence, is Porsche calling Automobile’s story “speculation,” after Automobile said that Porsche gave them those figures. I understand that no official Porsche press release has been issued for the car yet, so technically there is no publicly “official” word, but to dismiss Automobile just like that is odd.

I have little doubt that Automobile is right about the GT2 RS. Now we just wait for the Porsche press release to say so.
