Square Enix’s Project: Octopath Traveler has veteran talent working on it

Square Enix’s unexpected JRPG project Project: Octopath Traveler stole our hearts as one of the Nintendo Switch presentation’s biggest surprises. The old-school JRPG uses classically stylized sprites reminiscent of Final Fantasy VI to create a beautifully retro world, and we now know that it has the perfect man for the job helming its development.

Square Enix recently created an official Facebook page dedicated to the new game, one which names Tomoya Asano as the Lead Producer. Asano has experience working as the Producer on Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy, Bravely Second: End Layer, and both the Final Fantasy III and Final Fantasy IV remakes on the Nintendo DS. If that’s not enough, he also chipped in with the PSP remake, Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions.

Asano addressed fans on the Facebook page, thanking them for their encouragement.

This is Square Enix producer Tomoya Asano.

It’s my pleasure to finally announce our newest project, the fully original role-playing game Octopath Traveler!

While we can’t reveal any specific details quite yet (keep an eye out for promotional media in the near future), we’d like to share with you a behind-the-scenes look at the development process in the meantime.

A long road lies ahead of us, but we hope that you’ll come along for the journey!

Asano is Square Enix’s “retro guy” and is no doubt working on a dream project

Fans of Square Enix might be able to already tell where this is going, but if you can’t tell by his credits, Asano is clearly trusted as the company’s “retro guy.” All of his games are either remakes of classics or throwbacks to the olden days of the JRPG genre. We don’t have a perfect picture yet on what Project: Octopath Traveler is, but with sprites like that, you can bet that it is supposed to be a retro game of sorts.

And with Asano working on it, he has the resume to give us full confidence it will be great.
