Suicide Squad sequel already being planned

We’re still five months away from the release of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad but Warner Bros. has already green-lit a sequel. People seem much more hyped for the project compared to Batman v Superman, so it’s no surprise to hear the studio wants to see the team go on more suicide missions. It would be a shame for the project to be one-and-done considering the talent involved.

The news unofficially comes from The Wrap, which means Warner Bros. hasn’t announced anything to the public just yet. In the report, The Wrap discusses Ayer’s next project, Bright, which will reunite the director with Will Smith. But it’s the last bit, almost mentioned in passing, that we’re most interested in.

“Ayer hopes to fit [Bright] into his fall schedule before Warner Bros. brings him and Smith back for a planned Suicide Squad sequel in 2017,” The Wrap wrote.

If indeed the film is to start filming in 2017, we should probably expect the sequel to drop in 2018. That may seem like a long way off, but it would actually be a pretty quick turnaround for the film considering we got our first glimpse at Suicide Squad at last year’s Comic-Con. The movie doesn’t come out until Aug. 5, 2016.

If there is indeed Suicide Squad 2 is in the pipeline, it suggests a story has already been formulated, and, at the very least, Will Smith’s Deadshot is going to return. Warner Bros. has grand plans for the Justice League over the coming years but it might be Suicide Squad that carries the DC Cinematic Universe forward.
