The Car That Beat You

Many of us spend hours, months and even years working on our cars to get them looking and working the way we want them to. But sometimes, the cars say no more.

Our man David Tracy is as good a mechanic as anyone, but his 1995 Honda Accord—a car that should be largely trouble-free—continues to baffle him, even more so than his fleet of old, rusty Jeeps. Sometimes the car just won’t stay un-broken, no matter how much time and effort you put into it.

What’s the car that beat you?

Maybe it’s a car that proved impossible to fix correctly or cheaply. Maybe it’s a car with a problem that persisted no matter how many mechanics put their hands on it. Or maybe it’s one that seemed like a great idea at the time, but put you in way over your head faster than expected.

Me, I’ve owned a Subaru WRX and now two Mini Coopers, so I’ve never had any problems with reliability or bizarre, unrepairable mechanical and electrical gremlins. Nope, never. Not even once.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go cry alone in a closet.
