Tim Cook compares waiting for Apple Car to Christmas Eve

Even if Apple is working on an autonomous electric car, don’t expect to see it anytime soon. Previous rumors have estimated the mysterious project won’t show any results until 2020-ish at the earliest, and comments made by Apple CEO Tim Cook this week further suggests we’re indeed in for a wait.

During Apple’s annual shareholders meeting on Friday, Cook had this to say:

Do you remember when you were a kid, and Christmas Eve, it was so exciting, you weren’t sure what was going to be downstairs? Well, it’s going to be Christmas Eve for a while.

Cook’s comments don’t confirm anything—but they don’t deny such a project exists either. According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Apple’s car is an “open secret” in Silicon Valley despite the Cupertino company’s silence. There have been multiple reports over the past several months about Apple’s so-called automotive ambitions, but, unfortunately, it sounds like we’re still very far away from seeing an actual product.

Even if Apple is working on a car, the company has more immediate matters to attend to, as it’s scheduled to appear before a congressional hearing next week over the ongoing encryption debate with the FBI.
