Galaxy Note 5 pen-gate flaw officially fixed

Remember pen-gate? Samsung faced backlash over the Galaxy Note 5 after customers discovered that inserting its S Pen in the wrong direction could have disastrous results. This week we learned that the company had quietly fixed the issue, and now we have official confirmation.

Speaking to Android Central, the Galaxy-maker admitted it had updated the design of a small internal switch that was causing the issue. “Samsung can confirm that the Note 5 internal S Pen mechanism has been changed to avoid the issue caused by inserting the S Pen incorrectly,” the company said.

However, Samsung still wasn’t willing to take the blame for any broken handsets. The company reiterated its initial response that you probably should have read the user manual. “As always, we recommend following proper instructions for storing the S Pen,” the representative added.

Unfortunately, there’s still no way to identify the updated Galaxy Note 5 without tearing it apart. If you’re buying one now, there’s probably a good chance you’ll get the newer model, but even so we wouldn’t recommend testing it for yourself. Better safe than sorry, right?
