Huawei taps Leica for future smartphone camera development

Huawei already makes some pretty great smartphones, but mobile photography is one area where the company is still lagging. Now the Chinese giant may have found a solution through a new partnership with German camera-maker Leica.

The two companies announced the news on Thursday, promising that the deal will help usher in a “renaissance” in smartphone photography. Huawei says its goal is to completely reinvent the mobile camera with some help from the iconic German brand.

“Leica is a legend in the world of photography,” said Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei’s mobile division. “We believe no other manufacturer has revolutionized the industry as much as them.”

For Leica, the deal means an opportunity to expand from high-end cameras into the booming smartphone market. The company already makes some pretty amazing products, and we’re curious to see how that technology will translate to a mobile device.

“Smartphones make a very important contribution to the world of photography and open an important door for Leica to new target groups and fields of application,” said Leica CEO Oliver Kaltner.

Huawei notes that the partnership will cover everything from research and development to design and marketing. There’s no word on when we’ll see the first results of the deal start to trickle out, but the companies promise that more details are on the way.
