Motorola announced the Moto Z and Moto Z Force on Thursday. We’re here at Lenovo Tech World in San Francisco where we got a chance to check out both phones up close and personal. We’ll talk about the Moto Z here.
First, it’s a gorgeous device, though I admit it would be pretty hard for Motorola to mess that up given that it’s made out of military grade aluminum and stainless steel. It’s incredibly light but still packs plenty of hardware, and a 2600mAh battery that Motorola promises will last you all day long. The 5.5-inch Quad HD display is bright and colorful, too, which will be perfect for playing back movies that are stored on its 32GB drive (microSD card supported, too!) There isn’t a 3.5mm headphone jack, which means Motorola technically beat Apple to the punch there. USB-C headphone should be easy to come by, though, and it’s high time you bought a pair of Bluetooth headphones anyway, right?
Aside from its gorgeous and incredibly thin industrial design (Moto says it’s the thinnest on they market), is the unique MotoMods system that connect to special pins on the back of the smartphone with an easy “click” mechanism. They just snap right on. Several will be available at launch, including two that add additional battery life, a projector, and a speaker from JBL.
I’m excited for this device and the Moto Z force to hit the market. The Force is similar to the Moto Z but has a ShatterShield screen, more durable against drops, and a larger battery that promises up to 48 hours of battery life. Both are exclusive to Verizon until this fall when they’ll be sold unlocked from Motorola, too. No word yet on an exact date or pricing.
