For years now people call those things behind the steering wheel on manumatic/dual clutch/selecto-shift/tiptastic transmission-equipped cars “flappy paddles.” This is a misnomer.

Fun fact: these paddles do not actually flap, and they are no good at paddling in anything over a Class Three rapid.
Continue calling them “flappy paddles” at your own risk.
