Hulk to get “interesting arc” across Thor 3 and Infinity War

Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk might not get the standalone treatment fans have been clamoring for, but it sounds like Marvel is going to make him a much bigger focus going forward.

While speaking to Yahoo! Movies, Ruffalo talked about why there hasn’t been another Hulk film (Universal holds the rights), and how Marvel is getting around that by giving the character an “interesting arc” in Thor 3, Infinity War Part 1 and Infinity War Part 2.

“We’ve worked a really interesting arc into Thor 3, Avengers 3 and Avengers 4 for Banner that I think—when it’s all added up—will feel like a Hulk movie, a standalone movie,” Ruffalo said.

There’s always a chance Universal can play nice and collaborate with Marvel on a standalone Hulk film, similar to what Marvel is doing with Sony for Spider-Man, but that’s probably not going to happen. Not that it really matters at this point, because it sounds like the character will get plenty of love in the coming years regardless of whether or not his name is in the movie’s title.

So what arc is Ruffalo talking about? Recent rumors claim Hulk will become a gladiator in Thor: Ragnarok, much like he did in the Planet Hulk comic storyline, and eventually team up with Thor for a Midnight Run-esque buddy story. How he’ll feature beyond that is anyone’s guess, but I think we can all agree that seeing more of Ruffalo as the Hulk is a good thing.
